3/14/06 06:52 pm - Google in WaterlooThe google presence in Fed Hall was pretty impressive. They had coloured lights everywhere, a disco ball, and lots of posters up. They were serving food at booths scattered throughout, each with something different. I personally partook in a strawberry milkshake, some pizza, some sushi(!!), cake and a cookie on a stick. I've had cookies from Google for a while, but until now they were always on my computer. It remains to be seen if I will manage to find a camera to take a picture before my temptation to eat it becomes too strong. Update: the cookie didn't survive me going to class. So no picture. Sorry. The turnout was definitely in the hundreds -- it took half an hour for the line at the entrance to go away, and even then, people continued to trickle in. There were a lot of google staff all over the place chatting with people -- around 15. Apparently they reached capacity on Fed Hall after 50 minutes. After their info session last term (where they had twice as many people as they expected, running out of food & t-shirts; more food was ordered, but the extra t-shirts never arrived), this is probably appropriate. Even taking over Fed Hall, it's still pretty crowded. I managed to snag a chair after I got some food, and decided that it'd be better to hold onto it than wander around -- I wanted a seat for when the talking began. It's a shame that I lent my dad my camera -- it would have been fun to take a few pictures. They talked about what Google's been up to, describing each of their existing products, and saying how they're expanding everywhere... the same story as usual. I talked to a couple of the people a little bit (mostly listening... any questions I've had, I've already asked someone at some point or other). I didn't have an actual resume handy, but they said that they'd contact people even if you just throw a business card in there. I decided to compromise, taking one of my co-op business cards and writing the URL to a PDF of my resume (well, coverletter, co-op history, marks, and resume... I'd been planning to send something in soon, and I'd already uploaded it so that people could proofread it) on it. Earlier today, I went to the MC for the pi day celebrations. It's definitely a good day when you get free pie AND cake in the same day. |
